This position manages the EMD quality assurance program, the new hire orientation and training process, the training of existing system status controllers, the continuing dispatch education program, and the quality assurance program relating to contracted response time compliance.

Job Function:
Candidates must have strong communication, interpersonal, multi-tasking and decision-making skills, typing speed of 35 wpm as well as computer experience and CPR certification. Preference may be given to candidates with knowledge of medical terminology as well as EMD and EFD certification.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
• Manage the department’s EMD QA program and isolate performance trends
• Coordinate the continuing dispatch education program 
• Document and track the department’s EMD program to maintain accreditation standards 
• Manage and implement the department’s new hire orientation and training process 
• Manage and implement the training process for System Status Controllers 
• Serve as the head of the Dispatch Review Committee and the coordinator of the Dispatch Steering Committee. 
• Communicate effectively with citizens, medical professionals, public officials and political leaders. 
• Monitor overall system status for response time compliance, isolate trends in compliance issues, and propose necessary solutions 
• Receive, coordinate, and distribute feedback generated from communications and field employees as it relates to response time compliance to the Communications Director 
• Conduct self in an ethical, professional manner and project a positive system image

This position supervises the Communications Training Coordinator directly and the Communications Training Officers as it pertains to the training of new and current employees.

• High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED)

• Minimum of two (2) years experience in an EMS communications center as a lead SSC or at least five (5) years experience as an EMT. 
• Supervisory experience preferred

Preferred Skills:
• Type 30 words per minute and be computer literate.

MD Communications is a state of the art Communications Center, employing 22 certified Emergency Medical Dispatchers, all of whom are also certified Emergency Fire Dispatchers. We are proud to be recognized as a Center of Excellence by the National Academy of Emergency Dispatch, an honor we have held since 2000, a total of 4 consecutive Accreditations. Maintaining this level of certification requires strict compliance to the highest standards of accuracy and efficiency. We are the only Accredited Center of Excellence in Saskatchewan, and the fourth Center in Canada to attain this achievement.

Our Telecommunicators are dedicated to the highest level of customer service. Our center upholds a zero minute response time by providing immediate assistance at the emergency scene, instructing the caller over the phone with CPR, choking, childbirth, bleeding control, and other trauma or medical situations. We are the First-“First Responders”. We gather location and patient information. Ours is a non-visual environment, so we need to develop skills for handling emotionally upset or hysterical callers. We must instantly teach untrained people what to do, in the heat of the moment, while doing a non-visual scene and patient assessment. Scenes can be chaotic or dangerous and we are responsible for communicating all vital information to responding crews.

At M.D. Communications, we process and Dispatch Medical Emergency and Inter-Hospital Transfer calls for 38 Ambulance companies, including Saskatoon, Lloydminster and North Battleford, 22 Rural Fire Departments, 150 Rural First Responder Groups, Saskatchewan Air Ambulance, and Corman Park Police Service (after hours).

We are staffed with 5-6 people during weekdays, and 4-5 on weekends and nights. Shifts are 12 hours, starting at 06:30 and 18:30. We also do extra duties such as Data Entry, (entering and invoicing tripsheets), Quality Assurance and we do fundraising and charity work. We have many different roles and have many protocols and policies. Everything we do and say is tracked. All phones lines and radios are digitally recorded and exact times are recorded automatically, or by the computer-aided dispatch program.

Job Function:

Primary Duty:

Dispatcher, First Responder - Sacramento, California

Job Summary: 

We are currently looking for individuals who have customer service experience and a minimum of 1 year dispatching experience OR 1 year minimum experience working in a high-volume call center. A valid Healthcare Provider CPR card and First AID certification are required.

An employee in this class receives incoming emergency and informational calls and provides prompt and efficient assignment and coordination of safety forces field personnel in response to both emergency and non-emergency requests for service. Operates a LEADS/NCIC terminal and computer workstation entering, retrieving, evaluating and relaying information to field personnel. May be assigned as LEADS/NCIC terminal agency coordinator. Works both independently and as a team member on assigned shift, under general supervision with considerable independence, in a confined area and with limited breaks. Maintains alertness, sensitivity and good judgment during periods of prolonged activity in an emergency atmosphere.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or GED and a minimum of one year of paid experience in public safety communications, law enforcement, fire/emergency medical or other intense public contact activity, such as in travel reservations, debt collection, crisis intervention, or responsible customer service work. Currently certified for Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) and for LEADS/NCIC terminal operation and usage, or must obtain certifications during probationary period
  • Considerable knowledge of the functions and services of various departments and local agencies serving the community
  • Knowledge of specialized emergency programs and of emergency action plans
  • Ability to accurately type at least 25 words per minute
  • Ability to take charge of conversations, function calmly, tactfully and courteously under emergency and high volume conditions while making accurate and timely responses to various alarms, prompts and requests for service
  • Ability to speak clearly and distinctly with appropriate use of pauses, emphasis and pronunciation
  • Ability to train others in all aspects of the work
  • Skill in carrying out all communications and dispatching activity in relation to public safety operations
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other persons. Skill in the timely operations of computer equipment for entering, retrieving and evaluating safety communications information
